LIVE – Machine Head in London & Birmingham UK

I had the incredible honour of photographing 3 of Machine Head‘s UK shows at the end of the ‘Killers & Kings Tour’ Euro leg . It was definitely one of the best moments of 2014 for me, both as a photographer and a fan. As you can imagine, there were quite a lot of pictures to go through. But I’ve managed to get them down to these favourite moments to share with you…. “Don’t ever stop being a fan. Some folks think it’s uncool to be one. They look at me like i’m an idiot when I wait for autographs, tweet to a band or look out for guitar picks after a gig. These people can go suck eggs. The longer i’m around music, the more I realize the importance of staying a fan. If you lose passion for artists you love, you’re forgetting why you got involved with music in the first place” Lou Brutus. Hell fucking Yeah. Mx

Three in a Row

This month, I’m celebrating getting the third consecutive cover feature for Terrorizer Magazine! There’s something about the number three. It appears in science, design, sport, religion, philosophy and even in song lyrics. So I figure it’s a pretty good thing to get excited about. On the September issue we saw LG Petrov from Entombed A.D emerging from a coffin October was Jus from Electric Wizard with the most intense stare into my lens And this month, Tomas (Tompa) from At The Gates rocks the cover to conincide with their first album release in almost twenty years – At War with Reality. Looking back on these shoots, I have great and fun memories mixed in with challenges. But it’s no surprise as they usually come hand in hand with life – wouldn’t it be boring if everything was easy?! I’m stoked with how they’ve all turned out! You can check out my press section to see small versions of the feature pages from each of these issues. I encourage you to buy the magazine and help support magazines in print :) Off to celebrate with a whiskey or few now…. It’s five o’clock somewhere right? Mx

Live: Godsized at Hard Rock Hell, Wales

Hello there! I’ve just returned from an action packed adventure with Godsized! They were booked to play the Hard Rock Hell festival in Glynwedd, Wales. A great event that is now in their eighth year! An awful lot of ‘van time’ – overall I think it was a total of 16 hours actually on the road, there and back to South London – but there was a good vibe and many pit stops for food. These guys are like bottomless pits! And I’ve never attended an after show party that started at 3am before. Godsized played an hour long set, and ended with a cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs’. Considering they went on stage at 1.10am, they were full of energy and the crowd loved them. Here’s a small selection of the live pics. Check out the Godsized Facebook Page for more. I also shot some behind the scenes pics which might make an appearance somewhere soon. Mx

Live: Machine Head in Brighton

Last night, Machine Head played the last venue of their intimate UK tour at the Concorde 2 in Brighton – a 600 capacity venue on the sea front. This show had completely sold-out in just 3 minutes. To say it was an incredible and memorable show wouldn’t even cover the experience. It’s very rare for an arena selling band to play such tiny venues like this – they stripped everything right back to the bare bones. The only ‘frills’ was an awesome lighting rig, probaby the best the Concorde 2 has ever seen. And the ceiling? Literally dripping with sweat! It was hotter than hell in there. They played a variety of songs from the back catalogue and included new song ‘Killers & Kings’ (setlist at the bottom of the photos). Here’s a few pics from last night. (yes, that is sweat flying!) Setlist: Imperium Beautiful Mourning Unto the Locust Blood, Sweat, Tears Bite the Bullet Ten Ton Hammer Darkness Within Bulldozer Killers & Kings Davidian AestheticsĀ of Hate Old Halo — Mind. Blown! Sonisphere Festival 2014

Sonisphere rocked! Too many stories to share, and a load of bands photographed! Some of them I can’t post here as they will be printed in Terrorizer Magazine first. But in the meantime, here is the Festival in pictures through my eyes.   Before Metallica took the stage, the fans at the barrier decided to chant my name. I made a video of it! (Though it does actually sound like ‘Murray’ rather than ‘Marie’) An absolute blast! Can’t wait to share with you my live pics, of Metallica in particular! Mx

Arch Enemy – Terrorizer World Exclusive!

As I write this (21/04/2014), I’m sitting in a cab on my way back from the airport having done a round trip from South London to Germany in 21 hours. Exhilarated! Exhausted! My working day had started at 1am on Bank Holiday Monday, probably when most of you (in the UK) were just thinking about heading to bed. The sunrise was beautiful. My flight left Luton at 7am. I arrived in Dortmund, Germany and greeted by Jens from Century Media (CM), We drove around in an attempt to find some breakfast. In Germany, they treat a Bank Holiday like a holiday, and therefore nothing was open – except for the bakers in the train station and a couple of shops. I had never been to Dortmund, so Jens told me about the City as we drove to CM HQ, I was like a sponge taking everything in. There are many signposts in Germany! Dortmund is a lot like Coventry here in the UK, quite industrial in some parts. It also has very beautiful parts – this is the view from the CM building roof. It’s always a worry whether the luggage gets thrown around or damaged on the journey, so […]

Epica in London

Last month, Epica came to London to do press for their album ‘The Quantum Enigma‘ – which is due for release on May 2nd. I was booked to shoot for their Terrorizer interview. The setting? To go to one of London’s tourist hotspots and shoot Simone and Mark in a political style. Definitely something that you wouldn’t normally see in any of their other pictures! Parliament Square was the location of choice – as you can imagine – it was very very busy. Being there with my camera equipment could have also been quite tricky, but it ended up going very well and I was pleased with the results. It was very very cold that day (unlike the sunshine and light winds that the forecasters predicted). This image didn’t make the feature, so I can share it with you – one of my favourites. Simone and Mark hadn’t seen Big Ben or the Houses of Parliament before, so they really enjoyed walking around the shoot location too. We found a phone box and did a few fun pictures that you will also see in the Magazine. Simone found the classic London red phone box, and we laughed as it reminded […]

Published Update

If you’re in the UK, you’re most likely enjoying your 4 day weekend. For me? There’s still some work involved, but that’s how I like it. Here’s an update of my work in the press. Very happy to have shot a Godsized poster for their latest trip to Germany. The shoot, was at times, beyond hilarious! I must share some of the out-take pics with you all. The poster is currently printed and sold at A2 size. There’s also postcard sized stickers available. Then there’s the pic spread for Terrorizer Magazine feature ‘Hard of Hearing’, with Killswitch Engage and Trivium just before their show in London. You can see from the pics it was also rather entertaining when the photo shoot part gets mentioned! Various live and random pics of Therion, Arcturus, Iced Earth, Orange Goblin, Matt Harvey (eating a dog called Widget?!) and Killswitch Engage beating up the Terrorizer Features Editor – Tom – with the help of Trivium (Adam D pulling Tom’s hair is just brilliant, as he asked him first if he could do it!) The Crowbar (with support from Dripback and Hang the Bastard) show was immense with pics printed in Issue 247 of Terrorizer. Until […]
