I’m No Saint – Cristina Scabbia

Cristina Scabbia launched her first custom ring with Seventh Circle Artworks on Monday this week. A very exciting project that’s been in the making for just over one year. I went along to the Roundhouse in London to shoot some promos backstage at the Lacuna Coil and Paradise Lost show. The opening band, Katatonia, were already on stage, the venue filling up and as we went backstage, Cristina was wrapping up in an interview. Alex presented Cristina with her ring – the first time she would see it in person. The reaction was priceless as she jumped up and down with excitement, and ran around showing everyone in the band! Alex said that it was so good to see such a reaction of something he’s worked on, especially since all meetings were over email and Skype – due to such busy schedules and the fact Cristina lives in Italy. For the shoot, the only place we could find in the busy backstage area was in corner of the corridoor, by a fire escape! The raw brickwork actually fit really well with the style we were after, and with Cristina wearing the most snuggliest jumper for her interviews before we arrived, […]

Give me Fuel, Give me Fire

In September, I worked at the London Tattoo Convention for Terrorizer Magazine. Covering the darker side of the arts and tattooing over the weekend, for a feature printed in the magazine I blogged about a couple of weeks ago. Performance wise, I was also very intrigued by the Fuel Girls so I hung about for a bit to shoot them in between interviews. I have worked with a couple of ex-Fuel Girls in other shoots, but never seen them perform their routine in full. From pole dancing, ariel hoop, ballet, and urban dance to fire breathing and sword routines – it was all incredibly inspiring and sometimes breathtaking in places. Not to mention really beautiful tattoos too! I also really liked Cervena Fox’s ‘Queen of the Damned’ performance. Some of the pics were in the magazine, this one didn’t make it in and is one of my favourites. I highly recommend that you catch the Fuel Girls if you see they are in your area. Mx

My Terrorizer Cover!

Ahhhh, so I can finally share my excitement (and interrupt what would have been my next post) with you all, to announce that I have my first Terrorizer Magazine Cover! A few weeks ago, I shot the Napalm/Bodom show in London. With my lighting gear in tow, I set off earlier in the day and had a shoot with Shane Embury from Napalm Death for the cover. This issue would also be for the 20 Year Anniversary of the magazine – damn cool! I did the shoot against a white backdrop so that it could then have a montage of Terrorizer covers in the background (by Steve Brown) from the last 20 years. Quite surreal, seeing it in my local WHSmith’s yesterday. Shane was brilliant to work with, especially in the time frame we had to do the shoot. There were many great and strong images from the set, and I’m stoked with the one that they chose for the cover. There was also a lot of champagne, whiskey, rum, and delicious Honey Jack Daniel’s consumed these past couple of  days, as the magazine hit the stores on my Birthday! DOUBLE celebrations. And a Pirate Party to boot! (As you […]

November Published Update

What a busy month! There’s still some very exciting stuff coming up too. In the winter, the rock/metal industry gets very busy with shows etc in the run up to the Christmas break. The lastest issue of Terrorizer features my pictures from The International London Tattoo Convention, Brutal Truth, Grave Miasma and the Hammer-Smashed Festival that Extreme Noise Terror and Brutal Truth headlined. It was BT’s only UK show and it was insane! I got knocked flying with my external flash going one way, I went the other way, someone caught me, I was drenched in beer and my dignity just about intact. Literally BRUTAL! Thank goodness for my camera strap as it could have been an expensive accident. Anyway, here are the pages from the mag. I’m also going to put another blog post up shortly with my pictures of the performers at The International London Tattoo Convention, as there were loads of great pictures that the magazine didn’t choose, and I’d love to share them with you. The pics I took back in August of Iron Maiden are still appearing in the press. On the back cover of Bass Guitar Magazine this month you will see my photograph of […]

New Godsized Promos

Godsized recruited a new guitarist back in September, and I was called in to do some promo shots at their rehearsal space in South London. Here’s a few sample images The pictures feature on their Social Media pages and also on their newly launched Official Website. One of the images from this shoot has been used to create a poster for a giveaway competition on their Facebook Page. I do have many out-takes from the number of shoots i’ve done with the guys over the years, one day I will have to share them! Mx

ESO Live DVD

One of the best things about being a photographer, is following a band along their career and taking their pictures. One of the sad things is when those bands then ‘call it a day’. Since forming in 1996, ESO (esOterica) have a mass of achievements including; 3 studio albums, 7 Singles, 11 music videos and toured twice with Marilyn Manson. They had their ‘Farewell Tour’ last month, and a release of a Live DVD to celebrate. I attended their show at The Garage – London, to shoot for the DVD artwork. A 14 track live DVD with extras of their music videos and an interview. You can purchase it from their Online Store. Here’s the video for ‘The Divide’ which I shot stills for in March 2012. Directed by the legendary Tim Fox. I’m sure you will join me in wishing the guys (and Laura) all the best for the future. Mx

Employee of the Month!

It’s 6 years this month that I have been snapping for Terrorizer Magazine.  I can still remember my very first booking – Alice Cooper and Motörhead at Wembley Arena in November of 2007 – talk about a real treat! I don’t think they realise how much that meant to me. It was a pretty sought after show (I imagine they’re bands to tick off every rock photographer’s list), but playing the same show too?! And for a first booking? WOW. Alice Cooper was one of my first childhood memories of rock music…talk about coming round full circle. The September issue (#239) dropped through my letterbox, I opened the magazine to discover my picture and a little write up about me in the section ‘Employee of the Month’! Inside are 2 big features I shot – Matt Harvey from Exhumed which I blogged about in my Behind the Lens section, and Jeff Waters from Annihilator. Live pics of Clutch and a pre-show ‘Bar Rant’ with Tim and JP (Clutch) also printed. A busy month. Thank you Terrorizer Magazine! Last Issue (#239) I had pictures published from my biggest live booking to date. Iron Maiden! Unfortunately, I can’t share any of the other […]

Heaven is a Place for Thrash?

Exhumed founding member, Matt Harvey, is interviewed surrounding the band’s 6th studio album release ‘Necroracy‘ in the latest issue of Terrorizer Magazine (#239). I shot with him for the feature and we had a good old natter. After a stint of European shows, watching Iron Maiden in Amsterdam, then onto London during the 2 week break – for the feature shoot and some time out, before going back out on the road, Matt was on around 4 days/nights with very little sleep. Of course he demanded beer before we got started. He sank 2 of the bastards before I even made a test shot! 3 Things you didn’t know about Matt Harvey: On tour, Matt states that he’s ‘Vegan’. “It means we get more of a varied, healthy diet” he said. Though when the band received a buy-out, Matt headed to the nearest steak house, salivating, and he got found out! He went on to tell me that he enjoys cooking, especially hot/spicy dishes. Matt suggested the ‘Psycho Nuts’ that I told you guys about the other week, could be used in an Oriental style meal with chicken, rice, ginger… (he then reeled off a very impressive list of herbs and […]
